Fukagawa City is located in the heart of Hokkaido, at the northern edge of the Ishikari Plain. The Uryu River runs south through the northern part of the city, while the Ishikari River flows through the south. Along these two rivers, flatlands spread out, with urban areas and rice paddies stretching across the plains. Covering about 530 km, the city has urban areas concentrated in the south along the Ishikari River, while forests dominate the north. About 19,000 people live in this beautiful natural environment.
Central Hokkaido’s main transport arteries—National Route 12, the Do-O Expressway, and the JR Hakodate Main Line—run east–west through the city. Asahikawa is about 40 minutes by car, and Sapporo about 90 minutes by expressway. Limited express trains also stop at JR Fukagawa Station, so access is convenient.
The core industry is agriculture, supported by the fertile land of the Ishikari River basin and a favorable climate. Fukagawa boasts leading production in Hokkaido of rice, fruit, and buckwheat (soba), and there is a rich variety of processed products made from them.
This guide highlights the many agricultural charms of Fukagawa City.
